Giant Exterior Clock at a Train Station

Giant Exterior Clock at a Train Station

In 2000, we were commissioned by the Tianjin municipal government to produce this giant exterior clock as a symbolic welcoming of the new millennium and it is one of our favorite pieces. It is situated at the center of a 5000 square meter public space on the west of the Tianjin train station and has become one of the city’s prominent landmarks. The style is imposing with a classic style and the design integrates aspects of both Orient and Western cultures, symbolizing the beginning of the modern industry in China.

This giant clock is 40m in height, 14.6m in diameter and the area of the face of the quartz clock is 156 m2. The framework of the clock is installed on a wrought-brass support system weighing over 170T. The hand moving mechanism weighs 98kg with an estimated life span of 50 years and is capable of the non-stop movement of the 180kg clock hands. The precision of the clock’s time is guaranteed by a GPS timing system. The clock is also equipped with an automatic chiming and illumination function.
