Grilling Equipment (Contact Grill)
This two-sided grill, otherwise known as a Panini maker, has a large lower cooking plate, and at least one platen on top. The platen of this contact grill presses on the food, staying in direct contract with it, as it sandwiches the food between two hot pieces of metal. This makes it possible to cook food on both sides simultaneously. The bottom grill plate of the contact grill has raised edges or grooves on its surface, allowing grilling lines to be seared onto your food.
The contact grill is a piece of cooking equipment different from a double sided griddle, as a griddle has a flat grilling surface, unlike the grooved surface of a grill. Although there is only that small difference, griddles and grills can be used nearly interchangeably to refer to the small kitchen appliance.
Both the top platen and bottom cooking plate are made from iron coated with enamel to prevent unwanted chemical reactions with food while it’s being prepared. Its stainless steel housing is both visually appealing and easy to clean.
Traditional double sided griddles often use the bottom plate to conduct heat, but this steak grill uses both the bottom plate and the top platen for a more effective heating. The distance between the two metal pieces can be adjusted using a thickness regulator. This adjustment feature is important as it prevents food from being crushed while keeping food at the proper thickness. These grills are commonly used in bars, steakhouses and at home.
