UASB Anaerobic Reactor (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor)
Application
Because upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors include the dual processes of anaerobic filtration and anaerobic activated sludge process, this process is often used to transform contaminants found in sewage into clean energy (methane). The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor is often used in high concentration organic sewage, such as starch wastewater, alcohol wastewater and other light industrial sewage.
Design principle
The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor includes the sludge reaction zone, gas-liquid-solid three phase separator (including the sedimentation zone) and air chamber.
Any anaerobic sludge found at the bottom of a reaction zone is a combination of sludge with a good sedimentation ability and agglomeration ability.
The sewage enters the device through the anaerobic sludge bed and will come into contact with the sludge in the sludge layer. When its mixed, microorganisms in the sludge decompose any organic compounds in the water, resulting in a transformation from organic matter into methane.
The methane is continuously released as micro bubbles, which then continuously merge, and form larger bubbles during the rising process. At the top of the sludge bed, there is a low concentration sludge due to the stirring process of the methane, which causes the methane to rise with the water in order to enter the three phase separator. The methane refracts around the baffle-board and across the water layer until it enters the air chamber, where the methane comes into contact with the baffle board at the bottom of the separator. Methane will then be stored in the air chamber, then expelled using a pipe. The solid-liquid mixture enters the sedimentation zone of three phase separator, where the sewage sludge is then flocculated, resulting in increasingly larger sludge particles, until sedimentation under the gravitational influence. Sludge sediment on the skew wall will then slide into the anaerobic reaction zone along the skew wall. Treated water then flows out the top of the overflow weir in the sedimentation zone, then is expelled away from the sludge bed.
Features of the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor
(1) High organic loading; Short hydraulic retention time
(2) Does not need the mixed stirring device
(3) The sludge bed does not have the supporter, thus saves money and avoids blockages often caused by the presence of a supporter
(4) Theupflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor has a three phase separator, and does not need the sedimentation.
