    The magnesium hydroxide is in the forms of colorless hexagonal prism crystal or white powder. It is insoluble in water and alcohol, but soluble in acid and ammonium salt solution. The concentration of the saturated aqueous solution is 1.9 mg / L (18 ℃), and the solution is alkaline. When heated to 350 ℃, the magnesium hydroxide loses water and turns into magnesium oxide. Its solubility in water is very weak. It is a strong electrolyte. Brucite, the natural mineral of magnesium hydroxide can be use for making sugar and magnesium oxide.

    5. Usage
    a) The magnesium hydroxide is widely used in rubbers, chemicals, building materials, plastics, electronics, unsaturated polyesters and paints, coatings and other polymer materials. It is a good alternative to aluminum hydroxide as an excellent flame retardant for the following products: mine duct coated cloth, PVC solid woven conveyor belt, flame retardant aluminum composite panel, flame-retardant tarpaulin, PVC wire and cable, mining cable sheath, and cable accessories.

    b) In environmental area, the magnesium hydroxide is used as a flue gas desulfurization agent, heavy metal removal agent, and an alternative to caustic soda and lime as acid waste neutralizer. It is also used as oil additives for anti-corrosion and desulfurization purposes.

    c) The magnesium hydroxide is applicable to the manufacture of active magnesium oxide, fine ceramics and TV picture tube glass paint. It is also used in the electronics industry, sugar refining, insulation materials and the manufacture of other magnesium products.

    d) With good flame retardant and smoke suppressant properties, the magnesium hydroxide can be added into the polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and ABS resin, as a flame retardant agent or filler in an amount of 40 to 200 portions. But the particle surface needs to go through treatment by anionic surfactants, which can be inexpensive higher fatty acid alkali metal salt or alkyl sulfates and sulfonated succinic acid ester, in an amount of about 3%.

    e) The milky suspension of magnesium hydroxide is used as antacids and laxatives in medicine.

    6. Safety Precautions
    The magnesium hydroxide is a medium strong base, irritating for the eyes, respiratory system and skin. So make appropriate protection when using it, wearing gloves or goggles. After accidental contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

    7. Storage and Handling
    The chemical should be stored in dry and ventilated warehouse. Prevent moisture and heat. Handle with care to prevent damage to packing. It should be stored separately from toxic substances.
