The bass drum can vary in size and is used in several musical genres.Three major types of bass drums can be distinguished. The type usually seen orheard in orchestral, ensemble or concert band music is the orchestral, or concertbass drum. The kick drum, struck with a beater attached to a pedal, is usuallyseen on drum kits. The third type, the pitched bass drum, is generally used inmarching bands and drum corps. In music, the bass drum is used to mark or keep time. In marches it isused to project tempo. Bass drums can sometimes be used for sound effects. e.g. thunder, or an earthquake.
